PENTON MEWSEY
Hypothetical Old English 'Peningtun'='penny farm', ie: one which had to pay a penny geld. The manor was held in 1212 by Robert de Meisy from 'Maisy' (Calvados - hence the manorial specifier); the modern aberration is first found 1606 'Pennyngton Mewsey'). Ekwall speculates that this Robert is the one referred to in 1167 'Penintona Roberti'. Distinguished from PENTON GRAFTON, next door.
